If there’s one thing that gets me super excited, it’s saving money, so when I read about SavingStar, a new program that saves shoppers even more money, I knew I had to signup. SavingStar works with most store loyalty cards, so for those of us in Maine, it’ll work with a Hannaford or Shaw’s card. When you signup online, you add the offers you’re interested in onto your card and when you purchase the items involved, you’ll get money back via PayPal, direct deposit or a gift card. That’s a pretty...

From time to time I will be posting events in Maine that you can enjoy with your family, with a date or by yourself for relatively cheap…or even FREE! Next Saturday and Sunday, July 15th and 16th, the 7th Annual Acton Car Show & 2011 Swap Meets will be held at the Acton Fairgrounds and will benefit the Maine Children’s Cancer Program. Registration for the show begins at 7am, with inspections starting at 8am and running until noon. Ten trophies will be awarded on Sunday. Note: The Busy Workers 4-H Club will be selling...

If you are unsure if couponing is right for you and your family, this guest post may provide some insight. Everyone has their own opinions, though, so remember what works for some won’t always work for others. The only way to know for sure is to give it a try. My friend Amber at Thrifty Ninja is not an extreme couponer, but she knows what she’s doing. She updated a spreadsheet she started to keep track of her savings and her total for the past month is $1,077.91. And as she said, she didn’t buy crazy amounts of...

If you’ve ever wanted to try your hand at couponing but were unsure of how to start and what it entailed, then you need to check out my friend Amber’s videos over at Thrifty Ninja. She’s been working on a series of Couponing 101 videos that are highly informative. I know they’ve helped me, and I’m sure there are many of you that would be helped by them, as well. ...

Like many of the people I know, my wallet is filled with rewards cards for various stores and restaurants. In fact, I actually have an entirely separate wallet for all of mine. I know it can be confusing keeping all of them straight and what their benefits are, so from here on out, I’m going to write one post per week covering the benefits of different rewards cards. This week’s card is for Shaw’s Supermarket, which has 22 locations in just Maine alone. The official site for Shaw’s lists the benefits as follows: Instant...

Today’s contest comes from a blog.  Blog contests are generally safe to enter and I recommend it as usually the worst you get exposed to is spam.  I checked this one out and it seems to be pretty easy to do.  They have a service called Raffle Copter (right now it is invite only *shakes fist*) that tracks whether or not you did the task.  The mandatory...

Today I have a guest blog post from my fellow cheap bitch, Amber of Thrifty Ninja. (Yes, that is actually how we refer to each other. We’re cool like that.) We were chatting last night about a delicious broccoli cheddar soup she’d made, and I said that she should write up a guest blog post for my site that tells all of you how to make. So she did. And I’m thrilled. I can’t wait to make it. When you’re done reading her recipe, please take some time and visit her site. I know she’d love to have...

If you’re looking for a way to save money, stop eating out! That’s right, nix the restaurant trips. While it’s easier to go to a restaurant and not worry about the cooking or cleanup, the dent that it puts in your wallet is not worth it. Sure, a splurge now and then is okay, but eating out four to five times a week or more is not going to help your money problems. I should know. I’ve been there. As an added bonus, your health will improve. Eating out all the time is not good for one’s body. With the...

As you’ve probably noticed by now, it’s been very quiet around here. I’ve been busy working, which at various points has included five different jobs. Crazy, I know! I’ve also been focusing on my personal writing more. Over the past couple of months I’ve published one novelette, A Second Chance, and one short story, Sacrifice. Promoting...

We recently made the decision as a family to start eating more gluten-free foods for a variety of reasons. Money-wise, it’s hard right now to switch to a completely gluten-free diet, but we’re doing the best we can and trying to introduce a few new gluten-free items each pay period. Fortunately for me, I work for a company that produces several gluten-free items, so I’m able to get some items for free. However, I’m still looking for some recommendations on other tasty options available that aren’t too...
