Now that the cold weather is upon us, as well as my husband’s busy season at work, he and I are focusing on an area of our home that brings us comfort and security during his slow season at work….our stockpile. It’s like having our own store to shop from, which is cool.
When I was a wee lass, my parents began instilling in me the importance of stockpiling. They taught me that there really isn’t such a thing as job security, even if you’ve been with a company for years. Things can change in the blink of an eye. One moment you have a job that puts food on your table, and the next it’s gone and you’re left wondering how you will provide for your family.
It’s a scary thought, but I speak from experience. It happened to my dad. And I remember how panicked they were.
Because life is uncertain, my parents wanted me to know how I to protect and provide for my family when times grow tough.
I remember we had shelves filled with products we used a lot of that my mom bought at Shaw’s by using coupons and utilizing Shaw’s Supermarkets’ sales. She even did the same thing for my aunt who had hit a rough patch in her life. My aunt couldn’t afford much for groceries, so when we visited her down south, my mom brought a box of food that she bought for her. It did us good to see my aunt’s shelves full and to know she would have food to feed her and her son. We believe family looks after family.
Now that I’m an adult, I’m following in my parents’ footsteps. I stock up on items we use a lot of, especially during slow season. Because money is tighter during that time, we don’t have as much money to spend, which means I need to look for deals on items that we use a lot of, like laundry detergent, dish detergent, snack foods for the kids, shampoo, conditioner and more.
I know this may sound crazy, but whenever I add to our stockpile it gives me a happy feeling inside, which I love. I love knowing that I’m creating a security blanket for our family. It makes me feel good inside and helps me to feel less stressed.
I can’t wait to head to my local Shaw’s to stock up on the items during this season’s #StockUp Sale. I know that it’s going to take a load off my husband’s shoulders when slow season rolls around again.
For those of you who haven’t stocked up before, but would love to start, there are a few things you should keep in mind.
- Shop sales – Learn what items are included in seasonal sales and stock up on the items you use the most so you have enough to last you until the next time they’re on sale.
- Use coupons – You can find coupons in newspaper inserts, on brand’s social media pages, coupon clipping websites, etc.
- Flash freeze produce that you buy
- Freeze herbs
- Stay organized and rotate your stockpile
