The day I found out I was pregnant with my son was a day I will never forget. I had been wanting a second child for years, but it had never worked out.
And then it happened.
I was over the moon…filled with excitement. What I didn’t enjoy was the sudden onset of insomnia. I figured it had to do with my pregnancy, though, so I didn’t really worry about it. I never thought for one minute that my issues with insomnia would continue for years. (My son will turn eight at the beginning of September.)
I have a very hard time falling asleep at night. There are nights I lay for hours, in the darkness, listening to my husband breathe, wishing I could slip into dreamland alongside him. Many nights I’ve seen the clock strike 3:00am.
Some days I actually fall asleep with ease…only to awaken several hours later, unable to fall back asleep.
Or if I do, it’s usually hours after I awake…right before I need to get up to start a new day.
I honestly do not remember what it feels like to sleep through the night and wake up feeling refreshed in the morning.
I don’t remember what it’s like to fall asleep without problems.
And I’m not alone. Nearly 4 million Americans like me suffer from insomnia, and over half of those people struggle with staying asleep, which is actually the most common insomnia symptom.
What’s sad, though, is only 20% of the people dealing with insomnia actually think they have it and of that 20% only 12% actually get diagnosed by a doctor.
What’s even more astonishing is that 75% of Americans miss out on approximately three weeks of sleep per year (470 hours). That’s awful.
If you’re currently waging a war with insomnia, especially with staying asleep, there are treatment options available that you can speak with your doctor about that will help you get the sleep you need. Make sure to share all info about your routine, lifestyle and symptoms, though, so your doctor can find the best treatment plan for you.
The benefits of a good night’s sleep
Do you find yourself getting sick more often like I do?
Do you feel as though your memory isn’t what it once was?
I deal with both of these issues, and I hate it. I get sick a lot, and I never used to, and if I don’t write things down, I forget them very easily.
I also know that my poor sleep habits affect my mood and overall mental health. I definitely feel that it makes my depression worse.
These problems could very well be because of insomnia. An uninterrupted, full night of sleep benefits your body in many ways. It helps keep our immune systems functioning properly, as well as keeping all of our bodily functions working in tip top shape, including your memory.
