Today is another big day in our home. It’s my boyfriend’s daughter’s 12th birthday. Her dad is understandably nostalgic about her turning 12 because he doesn’t want his baby to grow up. It seems like it was only yesterday to him when her mother gave birth to her. He also knows next year she turns 13, and the teen years are often turbulent, so he’d like to freeze her at this age, like me and so many other parents want to do when it comes to their own kids. (And I know I’m going to be extremely weepy when my Baby Girl turns 12 and then 13, too. I hope he has a box of tissues ready because I’m going to need it.)
I’ve written messages to both of my kids on my author site and this one and thought I’d do the same for her. As always, I do not mention her by name or share her picture out of respect for her mother and father.
Sweetie,
In the short amount of time I’ve known you, I’ve seen you blossom into quite the little lady….a little lady that can burp like no child I’ve ever seen. You also are one of the sweetest, most lovable kids, and I was truly blessed when Daddy let me and my kids become a part of you and your brother’s lives. When we became a family it was a very happy day for me, and I feel like our family is finally complete. Though you are not my blood, I still love you as though you are. I would do anything in my power to make you kids happy and to protect you, just like I would my own two.
I consider you my stepdaughter, regardless of the fact that your father and I aren’t married. That title comes with important responsibilities and I will never take them for granted. Though I am not your birth mother, and I will never try to take her place, I will give you all the love and support I can as though you were of my blood. I will always be there for you in your moments of need, just like for my kids, whether it be to talk or just to have a shoulder to cry on.
I know over the next year you are going to grow even more, and I know Daddy and I both are excited to see what’s ahead for you. You are an extremely talented and determined girl, and I know you’re going to do great no matter what, and I’m glad I get to be along for the ride.
So….Happy Birthday, kiddo. I hope you have a great birthday and that lots of smiles cross your face.
Love,
Nikki
