Don’t forget to take pictures!
Easter Egg Decorating Tips – Possible Materials
There are a wide variety of options available for decorating eggs that won’t break your piggy bank and will make your kids happy.
- Hard-boiled eggs – Add 1-2 tbsps. of vinegar into several small containers that are filled with boiling water. Then add in several drops of food coloring, more or less depending on your color preference. Then add one egg to each container and let them sit until they reach your desired shade. The longer you leave them in the food coloring, the darker they’ll be. Once the desired shade is reached, remove the egg from the container with a spoon, NOT your fingers unless you don’t mind dyed fingertips, and place onto a paper towel or an empty egg carton to dry. From here, you can leave the eggs as is or you can give them a glossy finish by rubbing them with shortening. It’s totally up to you.
- Crepe paper – I remember using this technique when I was a little kid in school. Our teacher ripped up various colors of crepe paper into small pieces and we then glued them on the eggs. Another option is to wet the eggs and place pieces of crepe paper on them and allow the eggs to dry. Once dry, peel off the crepe paper and their coloring will be left behind on the egg.
- Glitter – If your child is a glitter hound, you may want to consider this option. You can buy glitter at the Dollar Tree of make your own. Amber at Thrifty Ninja has a great tutorial on how to make your own glitter on her website, so stop by and check it out. To decorate eggs, add a tbsp. of glue and water to a small container. Using a paintbrush, coat your eggs and then sprinkle on your glitter. Shake of excess and allow to dry.
- Coloring kits – You can buy the various different coloring kits at stores like Walmart, Family Dollar, Dollar Tree and Ocean State for very cheap. I picked up a tie dye kit to do with my kids this coming week for under $2.
- Stickers – You can buy Easter stickers to use on white or dyed eggs. You can even use scrapbook embellishments if you have some handy.
