Disclosure: I was provided with a Healthy Surprise Starter Box in exchange for an honest review. All thoughts expressed in those post are 100% my own, as are photos. No other compensation was given.
Healthy Surprise is a snack subscription box company who sends a box full of full-size snack products once a month. The amount of snacks you receive depends on the size box you order. There are three boxes to choose from and they range in price from $33 up to $99 per month. The Starter Box contains 11+ snacks, the Healthy Box contains 16+ and the Large Box contains 27+.
Recently, I was given the chance to review the Healthy Surprise Starter Box. This is a box I was extremely excited to give my opinion on because my son is on a special diet because of his ADHD. We have cut out foods with red dye #40, caffeine and sugar from his diet when he’s at our home. All three ingredients make him extremely hyper. More so than normal. Or as normal as the activity level of a child with ADHD can be. I also noticed the above ingredients affected his mood and would make him extremely whiny.
Since cutting those ingredients out of his diet, we notice a huge difference in him. There have been instances when someone else has given something with it and within minutes, he changes. Because of our decision, we’ve been looking for alternative food options for him that he would enjoy eating and not feel as though he were being punished.
When I saw this box advertised on Facebook months back, I was interested in it, but was also a bit skeptical. I had never tried any subscription box company and wasn’t sure if it was worth it. After reading other people’s reviews of other subscription box companies, I became even more skeptical. We aren’t loaded with money, and I’d hate to spend what we have on a box that isn’t worth it.
Healthy Surprise gave me a complimentary box to review. Once I received the box, I sampled all of the products in the box, as did my children, and I want to share their reactions with all of you.
Inside the box was a product information sheet on the Gopal’s Brownies that were included in the box. While it’s great to find a product that is raw, vegan and gluten-free and is full of natural enzymes, this was our least favorite product. We did not like the taste or texture at all. My daughter is very open to foods she’s not familiar with and she had a hard time swallowing the bite she took. If you’re someone who is big on texture and taste, you may not like this product either. But if you’re one who isn’t affected by those things, then I saw give this brownie a try. And come back and leave your thoughts because I’d love to hear them. ARV: $2.69 per brownie
Beanitos: I absolutely LOVED these chips, as did my children. They taste just like normal tortilla chips. And as I was eating them, I wished to myself that I had had some quacamole and hot chunky salsa on hand to dip them in because I thought they would taste great in them. ARV: $2.75 per bag
Just Fruit Bar: This bar is a rubbery, but has a great taste. My son enjoyed them. (The bar I received was pear and strawberry flavored.) ARV: $1.50 per bar
Veggie Chips: These chips are light and airy and have a great taste. I think they would be great paired with a sandwich or wrap. They are 100% all natural and vegan, contain no GMOs, dairy, artificial ingredients or hydrogenated fats. These were also a big hit between me and my kids. ARV: $1.32 per bag
Hail Merry Macaroons: I have to admit that I’m NOT a fan of coconut. I never have been. I hate the taste and texture. I knew I wasn’t the best one to state their opinion on these macaroons because I’m biased, so I asked my daughter hers because she loves coconut. She said they were pretty good and had a great sweet taste. This is one product my son refused to try. ARV: $5.00 per bag
Caveman Nuts: This was another favorite of my daughter and me. My son isn’t big on nuts so he refused to try them. But if you love them like my daughter and I, you won’t be able to eat only a few pieces. Before you know it, the entire bag will be gone. ARV: $2.09 per package
Crancherries with Almonds: I’m a huge fan of dehydrated berries, as are my kids, so these made our top list too. Not only did it contain delicious dehydrated cherries and cranberries, it also contained almonds, which is a family favorite. WIN WIN! ARV: $2.00 per bag
Cacao & Acai Berry Bar: There weren’t many things we didn’t like in the box, but this product was another one that fell near the bottom of the list. We weren’t big on the flavor or texture. Don’t get me wrong, I love Acai berry drinks but this was a no go. ARV: $1.98 per bag
Rawkin’ Spicy Beet Chips: I wasn’t sure if I was going to like these. I’m not a huge fan of beets, but I do love spicy foods, so I went into tasting them with an open mind. And I was surprised. I LOVED them. They had a great flavor and the perfect amount of spiciness. I would definitely eat them again. ARV: $5.99 per bag
Dehyrated Tomatoes: These tasted no different than the homemade dehydrated tomatoes I’ve made in my dehydrator. Would definitely eat again. ARV: $2.35 for a 1oz. bag
Mashups by Plum Organics: My son has tried other brands’ versions of mashups, so I wasn’t surprised when he liked the one in the box too. They are made from 100% organic fruit and contain no artificial ingredients. ARV: $1.00 each
Total ARV for all products: $28.67
Is it worth it to purchase the box if it costs $33 plus $6.99 for shipping and handling? Well, it all depends on where your closest natural food store is and if they carry all of these products. If you have to travel around to find them all, you’re wasting gas. Plus, there’s the wear and tear on your vehicle. In addition, most of the natural food stores around here jack up the pricing on items like this, so chances are, you’ll end up paying more than the prices listed here. These are all ones I pulled off of official sites, Amazon and similar sites. Prices may vary slightly on other sites.
This box is definitely convenient and a great idea for health food enthusiasts. And I think it would make an awesome Christmas present.
